Martin Luther King, Jr. Program Student Community
Anna is a sophomore who is undecided about a major. She is still exploring her career options but feels this internship has given her valuable experience. Learn more about Anna...

Why did you choose the MLK community?

"The MLK community actually chose me. I got a letter sometime in the spring of my senior year in high school that said I had been enrolled in the MLK program."

How did you find about your internship opportunity?

"My friends dad is a state senator and knew I was interested in an internship at the capitol. I met with him, he explained what it would involve and it really sounded like something I wanted to do."

What was your internship and why was it a useful experience?

"I am an intern at the capitol in St. Paul for Senator Wes Skoglund. My main project was doing some field work on a bill that he had coauthored and was scheduled to be heard by the senate this upcoming legislative session. It has proved to be a really useful experience. Interning was a much more effective way of exploring my options after college. Sometimes in class you cannot quite relate what you are learning and how it pertains to what you want to do or what you could do. Instead of reading about democracy, I was involved in it, and I got to see it at work."

Do have any advice for other students?

"Explore internships of any kind. It's an amazing experience and if you have no other reason to do so, you don't have to buy any books for it!"

If you have an interest in doing an internship, contact the Career & Community Learning Center for more information at 612-325-7577 or check out the following opportuniy:
