New Student Weekend (NSW) is a three-day, off-campus retreat that assists new students in their transition to college.  NSW Leaders guide students through workshops, facilitate small group discussions and activities to help students learn about U resources, reduce anxieties about attending the U, and have fun.  Leader applications are generally available at the end of fall semester.  Visit the Web site for more information.

The following awards are presented each year at the President's Annual Awards Banquet.  Nomination forms and guidelines are available in January and due in mid-February.

  • President's Student Leadership and Service Awards
This annual award, presented by the president of the University to approximately one-half of one percent of the student body, recognizes the accomplishments and contributions of outstanding student leaders in the community.

  • UMAA Student Leadership Awards
Eight $500 scholarships funded by the U of M Alumni Association (UMAA) will be awarded to establish undergraduate student leaders for their academic acheivement, personal character, contributions to the University, and leadership qualities.

  • Donald R. Zander Award
Two undergraduate students will receive $1000 for the Donald R. Zander Award funded by U of M Alumni Association for exceptional academic acheivement, leadership, service, and personal character.

This office offers a leadership minor for credits and extracurricular leadership programs designed to help you become an effective leader.

This program explores leadership through interactive and weekly workshops, a kickoff retreat, and a community immersion project.  Each participant is given a mentor from the community to support their leadership development.  Students meet on Wednesday evenings during spring semester.  Applications are available in the fall.

Tom Burnett, Jr. Advanced Leadership Program

This program is for U of M seniors ready to transition into the workplace.  Weekly meetings focus on advanced leadership skills and their application to various work settings.  Each participant is matched with a job coach from their desired career area.  The program runs the first eight weeks of spring semester.  Applications available in the fall.

Undergraduate Leadership Minor

The undergraduate leadership minor is a 16-credit interdisciplinary academic program to help students explore their personal capacities for leadership and learn how to engage with others to make a difference in various settings and contexts.
